Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe is located in the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle, the starting point of the western end of the Champs-Elysees, and was built in 1806 by order of Napoleon I. The Arc de Triomphe is the most important building in Paris. The facade has four sculpted groups and the interior has exhibition areas. The viewing platform at the top of the gate provides a panoramic view of Paris city.

The Arc de Triomphe is located in the middle of the Place Charles de Gaulle and is the Start of the Champs-Elysees. 12 avenues spread out in a star shape with the Arc de Triomphe at the center.

The Arc de Triomphe was built by order of Napoleon I in 1806 to commemorate the victory of the Battle of Austerlitz. The facade of the Arc de Triomphe features four large sculpted groups: “Peace” and “Resistance” on West Facade, “Victory” and “La Marseillaise” on East facade. La Marseillaise, which shows the people fighting for their freedom and country, is the most famous one.

There is another Arc de Triomphe in front of the Louvre, and that one is generally called the small Arc de Triomphe, or Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel.

The pillars and walls on the inside of the Arc de Triomphe are inscribed with 660 Names, most of them are French generals. In 1902, a soldier’s body was buried in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier directly below the Arc de Triomphe, in memory of more than one million French soldiers who died in World War I.

Visitors with tickets can also enter the Interior Exhibition Area to learn about the design details and construction history of the arc and climb to the top of the Open Air Observation Deck, have a glimpse of Paris’ city skyline.

The Arc de Triomphe in Paris was not the first of its kind, its ancestors were in Italy and appeared 2,000 years ago Arc de Triomphe of the Ancient Roman Period.
