Asam Church

A Magnificent Space Surrounded by Angels

The Asam Church, Munich, created by the Asam brothers, is small in size, but almost all of its space is filled with Rococo-style decorations. The interior of the church is dedicated to the World, Emperor and God from the bottom to the top, with the ceiling fresco "Life of Saint Nepomuk".

Asam Church (Asamkirche), built by Asam Brothers between 1733 and 1746, is a splendid example of Baroque architecture and is dedicated to St. Johann Nepomuk from the Czech Republic.

Manywhere Trivia:
Sculptor Egid Quirin Asam, and his brother painter Cosmas Damian Asam, are perfect partners for the architectural masterpiece.

The Asam church is very small, only 22 meters by 8 meters, but the Whole Space of the Church hall is filled with rococo decorations. The church is divided into three themes from bottom to top: The World, The Emperor and The God, with different lighting and color schemes in each section. The church’s Ceiling Fresco is the life’s work of the elder Asam, depicting the ascension of Nepomuk to heaven.

The two brothers first built the church according to their personal preferences and set up Seven Confessionals in order to guide the young people of Munich to the right path. The church was later opened to others at the request of local residents.

Next door to Asam Church is where the brothers used to live, called Asamhaus. It is said that through their bedroom window, they were able to see the altar inside the church.
