Linking Asia and the World
Located at the mouth of the Singapore River, the Asian Civilisations Museum focuses on the study of Asian culture and art. Through thematic exhibitions on Trade, Faith and Belief, and Materials and Design, the Asian Civilisations Museum showcases Asia's glorious years in world history.
The Asian Civilisations Museum was founded in 1997 and moved to Current Site by Singapore River in 2003. The Asian Civilisations Museum is dedicated to the study of Asian culture and art, with a particular focus on the culture and customs of Singapore’s ancestors.
The first floor of the Asian Civilisations Museum is themed “Trade” and focuses on the ties of trade between Asia and the world. The precious cargo of ceramics, gold, silver on display are from the 9th century Tang Dynasty Shipwreck, and the salvage process is said to have been a sensation with the discovery of a total of more than 60,000 pieces of Chinese Tang Dynasty porcelain.
The theme of the second floor of the museum is “Faith and Belief”, through Buddhist Arts, Christian Arts, Islamic Arts and Southeast Asian Ancestors and Rituals to showcase the diverse cultures and long history of Asia.
The “Materials and Design” gallery on the third floor showcases the Chinese Historic Ceramics collections, which ranges from funeral objects to tableware. Among them, the all-white Dehua White Porcelain is highly coveted by European and American collectors for its unique color and texture.
