The five-story defensive fortress is Representative of Manueline Architecture. The Belém Tower is decorated with a rope pattern, with watchtowers and turret areas all around the perimeter to discourage invading enemies. In 1983, Belém Tower was listed as a World Heritage Site, joined by the nearby, also Manueline Jerónimos Monastery.
The Belém Tower is not only a symbol of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, but also the most popular tourist attraction in Lisbon, thanks to its unique shape and long history.
