Buergersaalkirche

From Citizen's Hall to Catholic Church

Originally a Citizen's Hall in Munich, the Bürgersaalkirche was converted into a church in 1788. It is divided into two levels, the upper level has the main chapel in Baroque style and the lower level has the chapel of the Madonna and Child, the crypt, and a Catholic museum.

The Bürgersaalkirche is located in the pedestrian street west of Marienplatz, Munich, which used to be the local Citizen's Hall and was converted into a church in 1778. The facade of the church is the only part preserved after the war, and the statue of the Madonna and Child is placed above the entrance.

The Bürgersaalkirche (Bürgersaal, München) consists of two levels, the Main Chapel on the Upper Level is where the Civic Hall used to be located. The chapel is decorated in Baroque style, with a fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on the roof.

There is another chapel in the lower level of the church, and in Crypt in Front of the Statue of the Madonna and Child lies the German anti-Nazi missionary hero Rupert Mayer.

The Bürgersaalkirche has a large collection of Catholic statues, paintings and religious relics, except for the surrounding life-size Sculptures of Jesus on the Fourteen Stations of the Cross in the chapel, the rest of the items are displayed in the underground Catholic Museum, which is free and open to the public.
