Alishan (阿里山 Mount Ali) is made up of 18 mountains, including Jianshan and Zhushan, with the highest point reaching 2,663 meters above sea level. Dozens of thousand-year-old cypress trees have been found in the forest of Alishan, among which the Alishan Sacred Tree (阿里山神木) is the most famous, which is more than 3,000 years old.

The Alishan Sacred Tree is the oldest tree in Taiwan, having taken root around the Zhou Dynasty, with a history of over 3,000 years. Unfortunately, it collapsed due to continuous lightning strikes in the last century. In 2007, the 2,300-year-old “Guangwu Cypress (光武檜)” was selected as the second generation of the tree and named “Alishan Aroma Forest Tree (阿里山香林神木 Alishan Xianglin Sacred Tree)” as the continuation of the spirit of Alishan.

Alishan Forest Recreation Area

The Alishan Forest Recreation Area is a dedicated space for visitors to see the ancient red cypress trees in the forest, and there is an easy walking boardwalk. For those who do not want to walk, the Alishan Mountain Railway is a good choice.

Sacred Trees of Millennia

The Alishan Forest Recreation Area covers a total area of more than 1,400 hectares, and the park is lined with ancient trees, where dozens of 1,000-year-old cypress trees have been found, hence the name Alishan sacred trees. The most famous tree is called the Alishan Sacred Tree, which is over 3,000 years old.
