A Prosperous Mountain City
Changshu lives up to its reputation as the hometown of fish and rice in the south of the Yangtze River, with the beauty of Mount Yu and Lake Shang, plus the smoky wetland environment of Shajiabang.
Mount Yu and Lake Shang have the same rhyme and charm, they occupy the best colors in the world, making Changshu a paradise on earth. In the southeast of Changshu, the Shajiabang Scenic Area, which is themed on the modern Peking Opera “Shajiabang”, is another scene. The wetland ecosystem not only nourishes plants such as reeds and calamus but also provides a good living environment for wetland water birds.
The Yan Garden, Zeng Garden and Zhao Garden in Changshu inherit the essence of the gardens of southern China, which are solemn and elegant without losing their charm. The square pagoda in the Fangta Garden was built in the Song Dynasty, and the whole garden is centered on the pagoda, which is a good place for the public to relax and exercise on weekdays.
Scholar Weng Tonghe was a native of Changshu who served as a teacher to the emperors Tongzhi and Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. In Changshu, Weng’s former residence is preserved, and there are more than a hundred beautiful paintings in the main hall of the residence, which are of high research and artistic value.
