Fujiyoshida City is located at the foot of Mount Fuji and is close to the Fuji Five Lakes. Fujiyoshida has been deeply influenced by the beliefs of Mount Fuji, and countless worshippers have climbed to the top of the mountain from the Yoshida Trail. The city’s Kanadorii Gate, the Togawa Oshi House as Pilgrim’s Inn and shrines are the true epitome of Mount Fuji’s faith and history.
Since the Heian Period, climbing the mountain has become a popular way to worship Mount Fuji. The Yoshida Trail is one of the routes to the summit, which is starting in Fujiyoshida at the northern foot of the mountain. The Kanadorii Gate (Gold Torii Gate) is the gateway to the sacred Fuji. Along the way, the Togawa Oshi House used to provide lodging, food and guidance for Fuji worshippers, and the Asama Shrines in the city are evidence of the belief in Mount Fuji.
