Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, is located at the heart of the Pearl River Delta. As the political, economic and cultural center of South China’s Lingnan region, it not only has a long history and rich in produce but is also the place with the most developed food culture in China.

Mother of Guangzhou – the Pearl River

The Pearl River runs from west to east and merges into the South China Sea and nourishes the city of Guangzhou. Huacheng Square by the Pearl River plays an important role as the “city’s living room”. The Canton Tower, Haixinsha Island, Guangzhou International Finance Center, Guangdong Museum and other iconic city landmarks are all located in this area.

Canton Tower is located close to the south bank of the Pearl River and is 600 meters high, which was once the tallest building in the world when it was completed in 2010. The tower is equipped with an observation deck, a Ferris wheel, a revolving restaurant, and other facilities.

Imprint of Revolutionary History

The city of Guangzhou has left too many marks of modern revolutionary history. Starting from the Sanyuanli Incident against the British, the people of Guangzhou have never ceased to resist imperialism and feudalism. Although the Shamian Island was still occupied as a concession after the Opium War, the Second Guangzhou Uprising gradually brought the 1911 Revolution to a climax. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the Tomb of the 72 Martyrs of Huanghuagang were built to commemorate the planners of the uprising and the martyrs who died in it.

Food in Guangzhou

Cantonese cuisine, with its fresh ingredients, fine craftsmanship and authentic flavors, has been praised and evaluated for generations as “Food in Guangzhou”. With time passing by, the barriers between food, shopping and entertainment have disappeared, nowadays the best place to find the city’s delicacies is on the busiest shopping streets.
