A Song Dynasty Dream
Kaifeng, formerly known as Eastern Capital of China, Bianliang, or Bianjing, was the capital of the Wei State during the Warring States period, also the capital of Later Liang and Later Jin states during the Five Dynasties, and the Northern Song Dynasty. Thus Kaifeng is known as the ancient capital of seven dynasties and is a famous historical and cultural city along with Xi’an, Luoyang, Nanjing, and Beijing.
Bianliang was the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty for 168 years and was the most prosperous period of Kaifeng. The city was depicted in “Along the River During the Qingming Festival”, a famous painting by the Northern Song painter Zhang Zeduan. Today, there are still many relics of the Northern Song Dynasty in Kaifeng, including the Imperial Street, Bao Zheng’s Kaifeng Government Office, the Tianbo Yang Government Office, the Grand Xiangguo Temple where Lu Zhishen drew the willows, and The Millennium City Park, which was modeled on the ancient riverside scene of Song Dynasty.
Kaifeng has a history of more than 2,000 years and has many historical relics and monuments. The Kaifeng Iron Pagoda was built in the Northern Song Dynasty, more than 1500 years ago. The pagoda facade is made of glazed brick tiles, it got the name “Iron Pagoda” because of the brown pagoda body.
