Kaohsiung (高雄) is the second-largest city after Taipei in Taiwan, located in the southwest of the island. The Port of Kaohsiung is the largest port in Taiwan, with many historical sites nearby, such as the Kaohsiung Former British Consulate (打狗英國領事館) and the Cihou Fort (旗後炮臺).
Kaohsiung, formerly known as “Takao” (打狗), became a treaty port after the loss of the Second Opium War. At the entrance of the port, there are two hills, Cihoushan (旗後山) and Shoushan (壽山), which are like two guardians on both sides. With the prosperity of trade, people built Cihou Lighthouse and Cihou Fort on Cihoushan as a sign and a defense facility of Kaohsiung Port. The British also saw the importance of Kaohsiung in Taiwan and set up a consulate here in the 17th century, the Kaohsiung Former British Consulate.
The Lotus Pond (Lianchi Lake) is an inland lake in the north of Kaohsiung, with a wide surface and pleasant scenery. There are Confucius Temple (高雄孔廟), Dragon and Tiger Pagodas (龍虎塔), Yuan Di Temple Arctic Pavilion (元帝廟北極亭) and other religious places near the lake.
Symlbol of Traditional Kaohsiung Culture
Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are located in Lotus Lake Scenic Area in Zuoying District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Standing in the center of the lake, it's the most famous religious landmark in Kaohsiung, with two fierce beasts lying underneath the pagodas.
