Tosanokuni, Hometown of Ryoma
Kochi City is the capital of Kochi Prefecture, located in the south-central part of Shikoku Island, facing the vast Pacific Ocean. In 1601, Yamauchi Kazutoyo was appointed here, and built the Kochi Castle. Since then the Yamauchi clan has been the lord of the Tosa Domain (土佐藩) for hundreds of years. Harimaya Bridge and Katsurahama (桂浜) are the most famous attractions in Kochi City.
Kochi Castle was built by Yamauchi Kazutoyo, the first lord of the Tosa Domain, and is now one of the most popular historical sightseeing spots in Kochi City. Kochi Castle is home to 15 important cultural asset buildings, and the Tenshukaku in Honmaru (本丸の天守閣) is one of the 12 remaining historic castles in Japan, along with Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle.
The Kochi Castle Museum of History, adjacent to the castle, introduces the history of the Tosa Domain and the activities of the Tosa members, Sakamoto Ryoma (坂本龍馬) as the most famous one.
