Lukang is a seaport town in central Taiwan, historically known as one of the three major towns in Taiwan along with Tainan and Taipei. The ancient town of Lugang now has the Lungshan Temple, Tianhou Temple and many other valuable historical sites.
During the Qing Dynasty, with the increasing prosperity of trade between Taiwan, mainland China, and other countries around the world, Lugang entered its golden age. At one time, there was a saying “Fu (Tainan) first, Lu (Lukang) second and Monga (Taipei) the third”. In recent years, Taiwan’s economic centers have gradually shifted to the north and south, and Lugang has lost its former prosperity, leaving behind many old streets and temples, which keep reminding people of its old-time glory.
The Resplendent Magnificence
Lukang Lungshan Temple is one of the oldest ancient temples in Taiwan, started in the seventh year of the Ming Dynasty and worships Guanyin Bodhisattva. On the top of the stage inside the temple is the oldest existing coffered ceiling in Taiwan.
