Capital City of 9 Dynasties
Luoyang is located in the hinterland of Henan Province. It is a famous ancient cultural capital, the Shang, Zhou, Eastern Han, Western Jin, Northern Wei, Sui and other successive thirteen dynasties set the capital here. Luoyang has left the Longmen Grottoes, White Horse Temple and many other precious heritages.
The Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang is one of the three major grottoes in China, along with the Yungang Grottoes in Datong and the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. The Yi River, as a boundary, divided Longmen Grottoes into two parts, West Hill and East Hill. A total of more than two thousand shrines are located in these two hills, with more than 100,000 statues of Buddha. Among Longmen West Hill grottoes, the most famous is the Fengxian Temple Lu Shena Vairocana Buddha Shrine.
The East Hill of Longmen stands opposite to the West Hill across the Yi River, and in addition to some of the caves, there are major attractions such as the Fragrant Mountain Temple (Xiangshan Temple) and Bai Yuan Garden.
Founded in the Eastern Han Dynasty, the White Horse Temple is known as the ancestral temple of Buddhism, with a history of nearly 2,000 years. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Buddhist monks Kasyapa Matanga and Dharmaratna came to Luoyang and built the first Buddhist temple in Chinese history, the White Horse Temple.
