Rice and Silk,Merchants and Scholars
Nanxun is subordinate to Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is an ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River, located on the south side of Lake Taihu. Merge by two villages of Nanlin and Xunxi.
Nanxun retains many of the Ming and Qing dynasties’ residential houses, most of these arcades are built by the river. Standing on the shore, you can see the whitewashed tiles and scattered Fenghuo walls, giving people impressive visual enjoyment.
Nanxun is famous for its silk production, the most famous of which is the series of Jili Huzhou silk. The Chinese merchants took it across the ocean to participate in the first World Expo in London and won the gold medal.
As a result of the prosperity of the silk business, Nanxun appeared a large number of silk merchant giants, there was a saying: “The whole Huzhou City, is worth less than half of the Nanxun town”. Liu Yong, the famous silk merchant, was the richest man in Nanxun. In his later years, he started the construction of a private garden and named it “Little Lotus Villa. His descendants built a library next to it, which has one of the largest private collections of books in China.
