Ningbo and The Ningbo Fellowship
Ningbo is located on the south side of the estuary of the Qiantang River, where the first page of its history was opened 7,000 years ago by the Hemudu civilization. Over the past hundred years, the Ningbo Merchants Group has played a vital role in promoting China’s economic development, and the people of Ningbo have written a new chapter in Ningbo’s history with their hard-working hands and wisdom.
The Yuyao River and Fenghua River meet in the city of Ningbo and merge into the Yongjiang River which flows into the sea, and the junction of these three rivers is known as Sanjiangkou (三江口). Ningbo is one of the first five treaty ports in modern China, and like Shanghai, Ningbo also has an Old Bund, which is located right at the Sanjiangkou. Due to the special geographical location, several historical buildings, such as the Qing’an Guildhall and Qianye Guildhall, have been built in this vicinity.
The word “Tianyi (天一)” has a special meaning in the eyes of Ningbo people. Even the most popular commercial district in Ningbo is named Tianyi Square, all because of a private library called Tianyi Pavilion. The Tianyi Pavilion was built during the Ming Dynasty, and its owner, Fan Qin, was infatuated with books. He had contributed a large number of rare books for the Siku Quanshu, which was greatly appreciated by Emperor Qianlong.
Ningbo is home to many Buddhist temples, including the Tiantong Temple with its well-known Zen meditation, the Ayuwang Temple with precious Buddhist relics, and the Baoguo Temple, which is famous for the main hall built during the Northern Song Dynasty. There are also many other faiths such as Taoism and Catholicism.
