Shizuoka City, the capital of Shizuoka Prefecture, is located in central Japan. During the Warring States period in Japan, this area was called Suruga Province (駿河国), where Tokugawa Ieyasu lived for his last ten years. In 2003, the city of Shimizu was merged with the city of Shizuoka.

Late Years of Tokugawa Ieyasu

In the second half of the 16th century, Tokugawa Ieyasu took over the central part of Japan, including Suruga, Mikawa and Kai. He built Sumpu Castle in Shizuoka in 1585, and in 1607, after succeeded by his son Tokugawa Hidetada, he spent his last years in Sumpu Castle. After his death, Tokugawa Ieyasu was buried at Kunozan Toshogu Shrine and moved to Nikko Toshogu Shrine in Tochigi Prefecture the following year according to his wishes.
