Finding Yourself Here
Xiamen (Amoy), also known as Heron Island, is a beautiful coastal city across the sea from Taiwan. After the First Opium War, five cities, including Xiamen, Shanghai and Guangzhou, were forced to open their doors to trade, making Xiamen one of China’s most important windows to the world.
In August 1841, Xiamen was defeated by the British, which set the stage for the failure of the First Opium War. At the beginning of the 20th century, Kulangsu Island (Gulangyu) was designated as a public concession and many capitalist countries came here to establish consulates, trading firms and clubs, gradually forming the unique landscape of today’s “architecture of all nations”.
Maybe the Most Beautiful Town in China
Kulangsu Island (Gulangyu) is an outlying island of Xiamen (Amoy) City, the nearest distance between Kulangsu Island and Xiamen Island is less than 500 meters. Kulangsu Island was once a public concession in the early 20th century, there are still a lot of Western-style buildings on the island, known as the "architectural complex of all nations".
Xiamen is located on the southeast coast of Fujian Province, across the Taiwan Strait from the island of Taiwan. Xiamen has a long coastline, and along the Island Ring Road next to the sea, you can not only enjoy the charming coconut breeze and sea view, but also the Huli Hill Fortress, the beautiful old streets of Zengcuoan and the modern Xiamen International Conference Center.
The patriotic overseas Chinese, led by Chen Jiageng, never forgot their homeland and vigorously supported Xiamen’s education, founding famous schools such as Jimei School Village and Xiamen University. After his death, Mr. Chen Jiageng was buried in the Turtle Garden (Kah Kee Park) in Jimei School Village, next to which a Chen Jiageng Memorial Hall was built to record his devotion to his hometown.
