Echoing Sound of Tides
Yanguan Town is located at the estuary of the Qiantang River and is a famous tide-watching resort, under the jurisdiction of Haining City, Zhejiang Province. Every year, the 18th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar is the tide festival of the Qiantang River. There will be a spectacular scene of “two surging tides of the river and people” in Yanguan.
The Qiantang River flows into the Hangzhou Bay, where its estuary is 100 km wide at its widest point, but near Yanguan this figure is drastically reduced to 2.5 km. When the tide rushes in, the water near Yanguan will form a rare spectacular tideline, making Yanguan a popular tide watching spot.
Historically, Yanguan was an important gateway to resist the tide of Qiantang, once the Yanguan embankment collapsed, the crops in the south of the Yangtze River would be severely affected, so the construction of the Yanguan embankment became a major project of national importance. The construction of the Scale Stone bank effectively solved the problem of Qiantang tide, while the Temple of the Sea God in the ancient Yanguan city, the Zhenhai Tower and the Zhan’ao Pagoda all express the people’s wishes to pray to the sea god for peace.
