From IJN To US Navy
Yokosuka City is adjacent to Yokohama, with Tokyo Bay to the east and Sagami Bay to the west. Guarding the mouth of Tokyo Bay, Yokosuka has long been an important military location in Japan and is famous for its U.S. military bases. The famous battleship Mikasa is preserved in the Mikasa Park by the sea.
Battleship Mikasa, docked on the shore of Mikasa Park, is a famous battleship of Japan’s expansionist period, and was the flagship of the Japanese Combined Fleet, which defeated the Russian fleet in the Battle of Tsushima. Most of the space of the ship is now open for exhibition, with historical artifacts, warship models and personal belongings of Togo Heihachiro (東郷平八郎). Mikasa Park faces Tokyo Bay and has a musical fountain that performs regularly every day.
Manywhere Trivia:
Yokosuka is most famous not for the U.S.-occupied military port, but for its local-style embroidered satin jackets, which have been leading the trend for decades.
