Zhenjiang is located on the south bank of the Yangtze River and was called “Jingkou” in ancient times. Zhenjiang was an important ferry port from a long time ago, and the route from Jingkou to Guazhou (south of Yangzhou) was the first choice for people to cross the Yangtze River.
Zhenjiang has three mountains: Jinshan (金山), Jiaoshan (焦山) and Beigushan (北固山). Emperor Wu of Liang toured Beigu Mountain, leaving behind the praise of “the first mountain in the world”, which shows that Beigu Mountain was once the most famous. Nowadays, Jinshan is the most famous of the three mountains, and it owes all its fame to a Buddhist temple – Jinshan Temple. The legend of Lady White Snake at Jinshan Temple has been adapted into a variety of traditional plays and passed down to the present day.
