Charlottenburg Palace

Baroque-style Palace with Gardens

Charlottenburg Palace was built at the end of the 17th century and named after Queen Sophie Charlotte, the wife of King Frederick I. It is the largest existing palace in Berlin, including the Old Palace, New Wing, New Pavilion, The Mausoleum, the Belvedere, and a palace garden.

Charlottenburg Palace was built at the end of the 17th century and is the Largest Royal Palace that remains in Berlin. Several members of the Prussian royal family lived here, starting with Frederick I and the Queen. Charlottenburg Palace has undergone several renovations and extensions, and in addition to the original Old Palace, there is a New Wing, a New Pavilion, a Royal Mausoleum, and a lush green palace garden.

The Old Palace

The Old Palace, the main building of Berlin’s Charlottenburg Palace, is located in the middle of its axis and was once the summer residence of King Frederick I and Queen Charlotte of Prussia. The Old Palace has a Porcelain Cabinet, decorated with thousands of ceramics, as well as a chapel and bedchamber of Frederick I.

Magnificent Prussian Palace

The Old Palace is the main exhibition area of the Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin, first built at the end of the 17th century and first owned by King Frederick I and Queen Charlotte. The Porcelain Cabinet and chapel in the Old Palace reflect the life of the royal family. There is an exhibition of royal collections of gold, silver and crowns.

Manywhere Trivia:
“Frederick” and “Friedrich”, “William” and “Wilhelm”, are just different translations of the same names.

The New Wing

Between 1740 and 1745, Frederick the Great added a New Wing to the East side of the Old Palace. This two-story wing building houses the impressive Golden Gallery and the White Hall, decorated in Rococo style. The New Wing also has a collection of 19th Century French Paintings and precious sculptures on display.

Unforgettable Rococo-style Decor

Between 1740 and 1745, Frederick the Great of Prussia added a new wing to the east side of the Old Palace of Charlottenburg Palace. In the New Wing there are several rooms decorated in the rococo style, two banqueting halls, the Golden Gallery and the White Hall, as well as the living quarters of the members of the royal family.

Charlottenburg Palace Gardens were located on the north side of the Old Palace and the New Wing, the gardens were designed by the garden architects of the Palace of Versailles in France, and every flower and tree was designed with passion. Walking in the gardens, you can not only feel the comfortable and aristocratic atmosphere but also get access to the New Pavilion, the Belvedere, the Mausoleum, and other Prussian royal buildings along the way.

The New Pavilion in the palace garden is a summer villa built by Friedrich Wilhelm III in 1825, which was strongly influenced by the Italian style. A display area in the building houses Paintings by Native German Painters.

Summer House in the Palace Garden

The New Pavilion of the Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin is located in the palace garden, next to the New Wing. Built in 1825 as a summer residence by Friedrich Wilhelm III, the New Pavilion exhibits paintings and artworks by local artists.

Royal Mausoleum

In 1810 Friedrich Wilhelm III built a Royal Mausoleum in the palace garden for Queen Luise, which was subsequently expanded twice and in which sarcophagus of King Friedrich Wilhelm III, Queen Luise, William I, and other royals can be seen.

Belvedere

The Belvedere is a tea house in the northern part of the garden of the Charlottenburg Palace, where members of the royal family drank tea and enjoyed views of the river Spree. The Belvedere presents the largest Porcelain Collection in Germany, such as porcelain pots, cups, plates, and a wide range of ceramic ornaments.
