Dutch Square And Christ Church

Red Mark of the Colonial Era

Located on the banks of the Malacca River, Dutch Square is a famous tourist attraction in the historic city of Malacca. The buildings surrounding Dutch Square, such as Christ Church and the Stadthuys, have brick-red facades, hence the name Red Square. The square is also home to the clock tower and the Queen Victoria Fountain.

In the heart of the historic city of Malacca, Malaysia, there is the famous Dutch Square. It is located on the south bank of the Malacca River, and because of the surrounding Building Facades Are Brick Red, it is also known as the Red Square.

In 1641, Malacca fell into the hands of the Dutch, and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the occupation of Malacca, they brought in red bricks from their country and built a Red Christ Church on the east side of the square in 1741. It took 12 years to complete until 1753.

Soon after, Malacca came under British control and the church was incorporated into the Anglican Church. The interior of the church is simple and humble, with Dutch tombstones inlaid into the floor, Exposed Wooden Beams of the Roof were made of whole timbers.

On the south side of the square, a red building built in 1650 is preserved, which people used to call Stadthuys. It is the oldest surviving Dutch building in Asia, where the Dutch Governor, the British colonial government, and the Malacca state government all had their offices, and now houses the Malacca History and Ethnography Museum inside.

The Stadthuys is located on the south side of Malacca Dutch Square, built in 1650, and is the oldest surviving Dutch building in Asia. The Stadthuys is now used by the Malacca History and Ethnography Museum, which introduces the historical trajectory of Malacca and its ethnic traditional cultures.

The Queen Victoria Fountain in the middle of Dutch Square is covered with colorful marble and was built to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Victoria’s reign. On the west side of the square also stands a Red Clock Tower, which was built by Chinese, but its style is in harmony with the surrounding buildings.
