The Oldest Shrine in Mt.Fuji
Fuji Omuro Sengen Jinja Shrine, built in 699 AD, is the oldest shrine on Mount Fuji. The shrine is surrounded by a dense forest and has buildings such as the Hongu Shrine, the Satomiya Shrine, the Zuishinmon Gate, and the Archive. The vermillion Hongu Shrine was originally built at the second station of Mount Fuji, and was relocated here in 1973.
In 699 A.D., Fujiwara Yoshitada founded a shrine at the second station of Mount Fuji, which is the predecessor of today’s Fuji Omuro Sengen Jinja Shrine, said to be the oldest shrine on Mount Fuji.
Fuji Omuro Sengen Jinja Shrine is located on the southern shore of Lake Kawaguchi on Mount Fuji, and the shrine is surrounded by Dense Forest of Towering Trees. Walking through the Entrance with A Large Torii, a sense of sacredness and solemnity emerges. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Konohana Sakuya-Hime, who blesses the worshippers with good health, academic success, good fortune, and business prosperity.
Built in 1612, Vermillion Hongu Shrine (Main Hall) was originally located at the second station of Mount Fuji, and was permanently relocated there in 1973 due to the harsh environment. The Hongu Shrine stands opposite Mount Fuji as a gesture of reverence for the sacred mountain.
The Satomiya Shrine faces Mt. Fuji and stands opposite to Lake Kawaguchi, and is larger than the Hongu Shrine. It was worshipped by the Takeda, Koyamada, Tokugawa, and other great feudal lords throughout history, and today the shrine’s archive still houses many valuable historical documents, including The Katsuyama-ki.
