Kanko Historical Museum

An Overview of Sugawara's Life

The Kanko Historical Museum is located behind the main hall of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and depicts the life of Sugawara no Michizane through sixteen scenes built by Hakata dolls. The museum also displays hundreds of statues of Sugawara no Michizane collected from all over Japan, showing the popularity of the Tenjin Faith in Japan.

The Kanko Historical Museum 菅公歴史館 is located behind the Main Hall of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, which was Opened in 1973. The museum has a collection of dolls and statues related to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, scholarship, and academics.

Hakata dolls are a traditional craft of Fukuoka, and the Kanko Historical Museum presents 16 scenes depicting the Life of Sugawara no Michizane from his youth, exile, and death.

The Doll Exhibition in the Historical Museum displays hundreds of Dolls of Sugawara no Michizane from different regions of Japan, as well as statues of Shingyu the Sacred Bull and Emas (wishing plaques), showcasing the status of the Tenjin Faith in hearts of Japanese people.
