Koyasan Daimon Gate

Whole Mountain Main Entrance

Koyasan Daimon Gate is located at the west entrance of Koyasan. After the previous gate was destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt at its present location in 1705. It is said that the two statues of Kongo warriors on the left and right of the gate are the second tallest in Japan.

Koyasan Daimon Gate is located at the west entrance of Koyasan (高野山, Mount Koya), and is the Main Gate of the Whole Koyasan. After the original torii-shaped gate was destroyed by a lightning fire, a new gate was rebuilt in its present location in 1705. This Huge Two-story Gate is five rooms wide and 25.1 meters high. When you pass through the gate and walk along the road, not far from it is the core of Koyasan, the Danjo Garan Sacred Temple Complex 壇上伽藍.

Danjo Garan Sacred Temple Complex is one of the two holy places in Mount Koyasan, which was established by Kobo Daishi. There are a total of 19 buildings, and the Golden Hall is the main hall of Koyasan. The 50-meter-high Konpon Daito Pagoda is the tallest and considered the symbol of Koyasan.

Manywhere Trivia:
Koyasan is the Japanese equivalent of China’s Mount Wutai or Lhasa, one of the most important Buddhist sanctuaries.

There are two Giant Statues of Kongo Warriors with intimidating look on both sides of Koyasan Daimon Gate. They are said to be the second tallest in Japan only after Nara Todaiji's Kongo Warriors in its south gate. The red torii not far from the gate is the entrance of the Mt. Benten hiking trail.
