The street, which is less than five meters wide, is crowded with Various Shops on both sides, mostly selling fresh food, fruits and vegetables, and other ingredients. Nishiki Market Shopping Street is most famous for Japanese Pickles and Tofu, and many visitors give them as gifts to friends and relatives. In addition to tourists, local restaurants and housewives often come here to shop for their daily necessities as well.

There is a Japanese shrine called Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine 錦天満宮 just outside the east exit of Nishiki Market. It is located at the intersection of two of Kyoto’s busy commercial streets, Nishiki Market and Shinkyogoku-dori, and is visited by a steady stream of people throughout the year.
