Leaning Tower Of Pisa

The Failed Architectural Wonder

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, built in 1173 as a bell tower attached to the Pisa Cathedral, is famous for its distinctive inclination and is considered a national landmark in Italy. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is 55 meters high and is decorated with columns and arches. Visitors can climb to the top and overlook the Piazza dei Miracoli.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Torre Pendente di Pisa) was built in 1173, soon afterward it tilted due to the soft ground, which is the reason why the name Leaning Tower. It has become so popular that is now an Italian National Landmark, along with the Colosseum in Rome.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa was built as the Bell Tower attached to Pisa Cathedral, with seven bronze bells hanging in the top floor. The angle of inclination of the leaning tower increased over the years and was closed once at the end of the 20th century because it was too dangerous.

The column-shaped Leaning Tower of Pisa has a distinctive style, divided into eight levels when viewed from the outside, and decorated with Columns and Arches. In the sunlight, the shadows of the columns and arches are cast on the white wall, creating a texture of light and dark, which greatly enhances the beauty of the bell tower. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a hollow structure, visitors can enter the interior through Tower Entrance and climb 273 steps to get a panoramic view of the Square of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli) from the top of the tower.

The Pisa Cathedral, the Leaning Tower, the Pisa Baptistery of St. John (Battistero di San Giovanni) and the Pisa Monumental Cemetery (Camposanto Monumentale), all with white marble facades, were inscribed into the World Heritage List in 1987, along with the Square of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli) where they are located.

Pisa Cathedral was built in 1064 as the mother church of the Catholic Diocese of Pisa. The white marble walls and the loggia of the facade are in harmony with the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Baptistery. The pulpit and altarpiece in the church are over seven hundred years old.

The Pisa Baptistery of St. John is located in front of the Pisa Cathedral and was built in 1152. It is the largest baptistery in Italy, at 55 meters high. The Camposanto Monumentale of Pisa was built in 1278 on the north side of the Pisa Cathedral. With its rectangular cloister, the cemetery is a museum of art with 2,600 square meters of frescoes, nearly 100 sarcophagi and tombstones, represented by the 14th-century fresco "The Triumph of Death".
