Lukang Lungshan Temple

The Resplendent Magnificence

Lukang Lungshan Temple is one of the oldest ancient temples in Taiwan, started in the seventh year of the Ming Dynasty and worships Guanyin Bodhisattva. On the top of the stage inside the temple is the oldest existing coffered ceiling in Taiwan.

Lungshan Temple (Longshan Temple) in Lukang is one of the oldest ancient temples in Taiwan. It was founded in 1653, the seventh year of the Ming Dynasty, by Zen Master Zhao Shan of Lungshan Temple in Anhai, Fujian. In 1786, in the fifty-first year of the Qianlong reign, famous craftsmen from Fujian and Guangdong brought bricks, stones and wood from Quanzhou to rebuild the temple on the present site of Lungshan Temple. The newly-built Lungshan Temple in Lukang was the largest temple building in Taiwan at that time, and was comparable to many great temples in China mainland. The ancient temple of Quanzhou, Kaiyuan Temple, then sent monks to teach and preach Buddhism at Lungshan Temple in Lukang, which made Lungshan Temple famous on the island of Taiwan.

Nowadays, most of the buildings of Lukang Lungshan Temple were renovated in 1831, and the temple is a four-entry three-court layout, with Guanyin Bodhisattva as the main worship, and the middle road is lined with The Main Gate, Five Gates Hall, Stage, Worship Hall, The Main Hall, Rear Hall and The Rear Garden. The architectural decoration of the temple is magnificent and gorgeous, with art forms such as wood carving, stone carving, painting, clay sculpture and pottery.

The stage is a highlight of Lungshan Temple, the top of the stage is a huge Bagua Coffered Ceiling, which is the oldest coffered ceiling in Taiwan. It is completely built with mortise and tenon joinery technique, without the use of one single nail, and has important historical and artistic value.
