Merlion Park

National Symbols of Singapore

Merlion Park is the most popular tourist attraction in Singapore and features an 8.6-meter high statue of the Merlion. This national mascot Merlion statue, along with Marina Bay Sands and the Esplanade, forms the city skyline of Singapore's Marina Bay.

If you are allowed to visit only one attraction in Singapore, what should you choose? I believe that 99% of people will choose to see the Merlion on the shores of Marina Bay.

Located on the west coast of Marina Bay, adjacent to the Marina Bridge, the park’s Giant Water Spouting Merlion Statue was completed in 1972 and is 8.6 meters tall and weighs 70 tons, making it a Singapore's National Mascot.

Manywhere Trivia:
The word “Merlion” is a combination of “Mermaid” and “Lion”. It has several brothers, including the Merlion statue at Sentosa Island, which was removed in October 2019.

The Merlion of Sentosa that has left us behind

The Merlion statue resides on the shores of Marina Bay all year round, and together with the surrounding Marina Bay Sands and Esplanade, they form the city skyline of Singapore’s Marina Bay. The park is a great place to catch the classic shot of Merlion and Marina Bay Sands in the Same Frame, which brings together these two popular Singapore attractions in one shot.

Manywhere Tips:
Originally placed at the mouth of the Singapore River, the Merlion statue was moved to its current location in 2002 for a better view, because it was obstructed by the Esplanade Bridge. It cost S$7.5 million to move just 120 meters, which is a bit expensive than a bus ticket.

Behind the big Merlion statue, there is another Small Merlion. The 2-meter-tall, 3-ton Merlion has a slightly lower presence compared to its older brother, and is always overlooked. The small Merlion is only able to come to the spotlight when the big Merlion is not available for maintenance.
