New Three Night Scenes in Japan
At 531 meters high, Mount Moiwa is the perfect place to see the city of Sapporo from above. A cable car ride takes you to the observation deck at the top of the mountain, where you can see the entire city of Sapporo, and at night the city is lit up like a sea of stars, making Mount Moiwa one of the Top Three Night Views in Japan in 2015.
Mount Moiwa 藻岩山, located on the western outskirts of Sapporo, is 531 meters high and is called “The Farseeing Place” by the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido. They were right, and it is indeed the perfect place to Overlook Sapporo City. In 2015, Mount Moiwa was selected as one of the Top Three Night Views in Japan.
Take the cable car at the base of the mountain to the halfway station, from where you can either hike to the top or transfer to the mini cable car, which takes less than two minutes to the mountain top observation deck. From the observation deck, you can see the whole Sapporo city and even Ishikari Bay and the rolling hills in the distance on a good day. When night falls, the neon lights at the bottom of the mountain are like stars falling from the sky, making it a dazzling sight to behold.
Sapporo’s Mount Moiwa is also a favorite dating spot for Japanese couples. A Bell of Happiness stands in the middle of the observation deck at the top of the mountain, where couples can ring the bell together and hang a padlock, a symbol of love, to the railing next to it as a promise and witness to their relationship.
