Largest Mosque in ASEAN
The 5.3-hectare National Mosque of Malaysia, completed in 1965, is one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia. The National Mosque has a 16-pointed star giant blue roof and a 73-meter-tall minaret, as well as a main gathering hall that can accommodate 8,000 worshippers.
After Malaysia’s independence in 1957, plans to build a national mosque were on the agenda until 1965. The National Mosque of Malaysia (Masjid Negara Malaysia) covers an area of 5.3 hectares and is one of the Largest Mosques in Southeast Asia, where most of the important religious events in Malaysia are held.
The National Mosque of Malaysia has been designed with great delicacy, incorporating Modern Style of Islamic Art, and is decorated with geometric patterns and Islamic scripts everywhere. The National Mosque has a 73-meter-high Minaret and the iconic 16-pointed Star Blue Roof. The Main Gathering Hall under the roof can accommodate at least 8,000 devotees.
The periphery of the grand complex of the National Mosque is filled with tall Palm Trees and Fountains. There is also a Heroes' Mausoleum (Makam Pahlawan) nearby , where only the Malaysian Muslim leaders, such as Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister are entitled to be buried.
