Old Town Hall

The 15th Century Horologe

Prague's Old Town Hall is located southwest of the Old Town Square and consists of several adjacent buildings. The astronomical clock on the southern facade of the Old Town Hall dates from the 15th century and features an extremely beautiful clock face with mechanical dolls performing at every hour. The 70-meter-tall tower is topped by an observation deck.

Prague’s Old Town Hall was built in 1338 in the southwest corner of Prague’s Old Town Square. It was not until 1364 that the 70-meter-high Town Hall Tower was completed. The top of the tower has an observation deck, where you can look out over Prague Castle, the Old Town Bridge Tower, the Powder Tower, and other city landmarks.

Prague Orloj, the Astronomical Clock on the south facade of the Old Town Hall was built in the 15th century and has two magnificent circular dials. At each hour, the skeleton on the right side of the dial opens with a puppet show, in which the twelve apostles of Jesus appear through two small windows above, attracting a large number of visitors to the square.

Visitors can walk into the Old Town Hall and admire the Mosaic Frescoes in the Hall. The two side walls depict the story of mythological princess Libuše prophesying the glory of Prague, and the Slavic Allegiance to Prague.

Manywhere Trivia:
During World War II people used plaster to hide the mosaic frescoes in the Town Hall from the Germans, it worked.

Prague’s Old Town Hall Consists of Several Adjacent Buildings, which were built in different eras, appear to be independent of each other from the outside. The building has rooms such as the Council Chamber, the George Hall, the Session Chamber, and the Town Hall Chapel. Its interior is decorated and furnished as it was in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Old Town Square, where the Town Hall is located, is also one of Prague’s popular attractions, with colorful buildings and historic churches surrounding the square.

Old Town Square is a famous sightseeing spot in Prague, with landmarks such as the Old Town Hall, Church of Our Lady before Týn, St. Nicholas Church, and the statue of reformer Jan Hus in the center of the square. The square's architecture is characterized by its rich colors, which cover different styles such as Gothic, Baroque, and Rococo.
