On the 2.2 km long Orchard Road, there are countless fashionable shopping malls: ION Orchard, Ngee Ann City and Takashimaya, Paragon, Wisma Atria… …where you can find stores of almost every luxury brand in the world, such as the Louis Vuitton flagship store in Ngee Ann City and the Gucci flagship store that occupies nearly half of the Paragon.
The first department store was established in Orchard Road by Chinese entrepreneur C.K. Tang in 1958, when the area was still just an ordinary Chinese residential area. In 1982, C.K. Tang’s department store was renovated into a legendary landmark with a 33-story Chinese palace-style building, which is now Orchard Road’s Tangs Plaza.
Manywhere Trivia:
It is said that C.K. Tang has a fantastic business insight. When his Orchard Road department store was first established, there was still a Chinese cemetery across the street.
While you’re shopping, try some of Orchard’s signature ice cream, and then climb to the ION Orchard’s sky-scraping observation deck for a great view of the city. If you’ve had enough of the glitz and glamour of the mall, take a stroll around the nearby Emerald Hill for a rare moment of serenity in this steel forest.
