Osaka Station / Umeda Commercial District

The Nexus of Kanto

Umeda is located in the northern part of Osaka, where six stations, including Osaka Station, and dozens of rail lines intersect. The Umeda district is one of the core business districts in Osaka and is home to a number of major shopping complexes, including Osaka Station City, Hankyu Department Store, and Daimaru Department Store.

Umeda 梅田 is located in the northern part of Osaka City and is an important transportation hub for Osaka. The area is served by six stations: JR Osaka Station, Hankyu Umeda Station, Hanshin Umeda Station, Subway Umeda Station, Subway Nishi Umeda Station and Subway Higashi Umeda Station. Dozens of national and private rail lines intersect here, and the daily flow of several million passengers makes Umeda one of the most densely populated areas in Japan.

The Osaka Station ranks first among the six stations in terms of average daily usage, and it serves as an interchange station for several JR lines, including the JR Osaka Loop Line, JR Kyoto Line, JR Kobe Line, and JR Takarazuka Line. Osaka Station has 11 Tracks and Multi-layer Three-dimensional Interior Space from underground to five levels above ground. This creative design not only enhances the attractiveness of the station, but also effectively lowers the density of passengers. The Space-time Gallery on the fifth floor of the station is very spacious and open, where passengers can take a short break and watch the trains whizzing by underneath them, giving them a sense of transcending time and space.

Manywhere Trivia:
It is said that Osaka’s Umeda, like Kansai Airport, is the result of the reclamation of mudflats and wetlands, and its name comes from the word Umeta 埋めた (Landfilling).

As one of the core business districts in Osaka, Umeda receives a large number of visitors from all over the world. In the last decade or so, large commercial complexes have sprung up in the Umeda district, such as Osaka Station City, which is centered around Osaka Station, Grand Front Osaka, which has many high-end hotels and stores, and Japanese stores such as Daimaru Department Store, Hanshin Department Store, and Hankyu Department Store.

As the land price is high, real-estate developers have tried to use the available resources in every way possible, so many Rooftop Gardens have appeared on skyscraper rooftops. People can relax after shopping and enjoy the rare greenery in the concrete jungle.
