Penang Street Art

New Chapter of Old Streets

Penang was designated as a World Heritage Site in 2008. To attract more tourists, a series of street artworks were launched. Mural paintings such as "Old Motorcycle" and "Kids on Bicycle" by Ernest Zacharevic and 52 cartoons made of steel-rod sculptures were also created in the streets.

In 2008, George Town Penang was inscribed on the World Heritage List. To attract more tourists, a series of street artworks have been created, including murals and steel-rod caricatures. These modern artworks brought life to the old streets of Penang, and soon after, tourists from all over the world began to flock to Penang, not only for the city’s historical sites but also the street artworks.

Ernest Zacharevic is a street art pioneer, and the young Lithuanian-born artist created Kids on Bicycle, Old Motorcycle, “Kung Fu Girl” and many other popular and acclaimed mural works. Then more and more local artists also joined him, Brother and Sister on Swing, Children Playing Basketball, “The Indian Boatman” and other works of art have been created, and have become the surprising discoveries among tourists.

The streets of Penang are also home to 52 Steel-Rod Sculptures, which won the 2009 Marking George Town competition for their humorous style and theme, presenting the vivid folk culture of Penang.

When you walk through the streets of Penang, you will encounter art in some street corners. This Combination of Virtual and Real Creation is refreshing and brings the visitors closer to the mural characters.
