Piazzale Michelangelo is located at the top of the hill on the south bank of the Arno River in Florence, and is named after the Italian Renaissance master Michelangelo. A replica of Michelangelo's David stands in the center of this Florentine piazza, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Florence.

Florence Cathedral, with a dome that spans 45 meters, is a marvel of architectural history. The 16th-century vault was painted by Vasari and Zuccari, and the church has an octagonal baptistery in front and an 85-meter-high Giotto's Bell Tower on the south side.

The Old Palace of Florence, also known as Palazzo Vecchio, was the residence of the Medici family in the 16th century, with the Hall of the Five Hundred and a 94-meter-high bell tower. Outside the Old Palace is the famous Piazza della Signoria, with the Loggia dei Lanzi, the Neptune Fountain, and the Equestrian Monument of Cosimo I near it.

The square is named after the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo, and in the center stands a Bronze Statue of David, which is a replica of the original inside Gallery of the Academy of Florence. The four sculptures at David’s feet, Day, Night, Dawn, and Dusk, are Michelangelo’s tomb sculptures for the Medici family, the originals of which are inside the Medici Chapels of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence.

Michelangelo's David

The Gallery of the Academy of Florence, founded in 1784, is part of the Florentine Academy of Fine Arts. The museum has a collection of sculptures, paintings and musical instruments, and its crowning glory is the statue of David, created by Michelangelo in 1504.

Thanks to the excellent view and free admission, Piazzale Michelangelo is a must-see for tourists, and every day the parking lot of the piazza is filled with sightseeing buses. It is in the square that the keen-smelling merchants set up Rows of Shops to welcome tourists with souvenirs and delicious ice cream.
