Poh San Teng Temple

Historic Chinese Burial Mounds

Malacca's Poh San Teng Temple was built at the foot of Mount Bukit China, which is said to have been where Zheng He was stationed during his voyage. The area is the largest Chinese burial ground in Malacca, and the temple was built to pray for the deceased and is dedicated to Fude Zhengshen.

Malacca Po San Ting 宝山亭 is a Historic Chinese Temple, built at the foot of Bukit China 三宝山. It is also the largest Chinese burial area in Malacca, with the total number of Chinese tombs exceeding 12,000, including many Ming Dynasty ancient tombs.

There are two stories about the origin of the Poh San Teng Temple, one says that it was built in 1795, when the Chinese Kapitan Chua Su Cheong wanted to provide a place for people to worship the souls of their ancestors, and the temple is dedicated to Fude Zhengshen, Righteous God of Virtue and Blessing is the one who guides the way for the dead.

Another theory is that Zheng He used to station his fleet at Bukit China during his voyage, and the Chinese name of Bukit China, Mount Sanbao, comes from “Sanbao Eunuch Zheng He”. The temple is not only Dedicated to Zheng He, but also has the Sanbao Well dug by the Ming Dynasty troops as a proof.

To follow the footsteps of Zheng He, more and more people are making Poh San Teng Temple a must-see in Malacca. There is another Han Li Bao Well near the temple that does not dry up even in times of drought, as well as the Melaka Warrior Monument, which can be visited together with the Poh San Teng Temple.
