Witnessing the Changes
The port of Hakodate was once an important port in southern Hokkaido, and the seven Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses lined up along the shore are witnesses of Hakodate's history. The commercial area converted from the old warehouses is full of restaurants, shops and bars, and is a visiters' paradise.
Hakodate was once an important port city in southern Hokkaido, and many talented people and goods flowed in from here, playing an essential role in the development of Hokkaido. Today the Hakodate Port is more of a passenger port, with regular daily services between Aomori and Hakodate.
On the shore of the harbor, the Seven Kanamori Red Brick Warehouses 金森赤レンガ倉庫 were founded by Kumashiro Watanabe, one of the four tycoons of Hakodate. These century-old buildings lie there quietly, witnessing the Changes in the City's History.
Today these seven warehouses have been transformed into a Shopping Complex with four parts of different styles: Bay Hakodate, Kanemori Yobutuskan, Hakodate History Plaza, and Kanamori Hall. There are snack food shops, specialty boutiques, and stages for cultural events, with a wide range of goods just waiting for you.
