Bustling Seaport Business District

The Port of Kobe opened in 1868, and after a century and a half of development, it is now one of the top five ports in Japan. The Kobe Port Tower in Meriken Park is the symbol of the Port of Kobe, and Kobe Harborland, the coastal commercial district, provides a comfortable shopping environment for visitors.

Soon after the port of Kobe opened, a new pier was built on the waterfront, not far from the U.S. Consulate, and was called the Meriken (American) Pier, which was transformed into a waterfront park in 1987 and opened to the world as the famous Meriken Park in Kobe.

Messages in the Park

The 16-hectare Meriken Park is mostly a spacious green field, and the 108m Tall Kobe Port Tower is one of the greatest symbols of Kobe Port, with a red mesh wall that is transformed from a Japanese drum. At night, the tower is lit up like a lighthouse to guide the ships. On the waterfront side of Meriken Park, there is always a long line of people waiting to take pictures of the giant letters BE KOBE.

Former NBA player Joe Bryant named his son after the famous beef of Kobe, then the world met Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

The Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995 can’t be described as anything but tragic, and the Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park has preserved part of the site of the disaster, allowing people to see how serious the damage caused to Japan’s Kinki region through the tilted lampposts and collapsed ground.

Kobe Harborland across the water from Meriken Park, is a commercial district adjacent to Kobe Harbor, consisting of a number of large commercial centers such as Umie Mosaic, Umie Mall, and Kobe Red Brick Warehouse, as well as theaters, hotels, and clubs. Kobe Harborland provides a comfortable shopping environment for tourists, where both children and adults can find their favorites.
