Potsdamer Platz

Rise From Post-War Ruins

Potsdamer Platz is located one kilometer south of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, with its shopping malls, high-end hotels, cinemas, theaters, and casinos, is one of Berlin's key business districts. Potsdamer Platz was once in ruins after World War II, and still has remnants of the Berlin Wall.

Located about a kilometer south of the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz is named because it was once the site of the Potsdam Gate, one of Berlin’s 18 gates.

Manywhere Trivia:
Potsdamer Platz is in Berlin, not in Potsdam. Just like the Pariser Platz (The Paris Square) next to the Brandenburg Gate is not in Paris either.

Potsdamer Platz has been one of the most important business districts in Berlin and Europe since the construction of the Potsdamer Platz railway station in the 19th century, and in 1924 Europe's First Traffic Light was erected at the intersection of Potsdamer Platz.

The area around the square was left in ruins by the artillery fire of World War II. After the end of the war, the Berlin Wall was turned into an impassable chasm that divided Potsdamer Platz in two. Parts of it can still be seen on the square today, which are Remnants of the Berlin Wall.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall at the end of the last century, Potsdamer Platz came back into our view thanks to its prime location. Landmarks as the Sony Center and the Deutsche Bahn Building rose. Hundreds of shops, several high-end hotels, cinemas, theaters, and casinos are located in the vicinity of the square, and the S and U lines of Berlin City Railway both have stations there.

The involvement of famous designers, the integration of commerce and the city, and the rise of landmarks …… make Potsdamer Platz a model for post-war urban redevelopment in Europe.
