Rodin Museum

The Father of Modern Sculpture

The Rodin Museum in Paris was converted from Rodin's former residence, the Hotel Biron. In this grand mansion and gardens, Rodin's sculptural masterpieces such as The Thinker, The Age of Bronze, The Kiss, and The Gates of Hell are on display, along with Rodin's collection of Monet and Van Gogh paintings.

The Hotel Biron, where the Musée Rodin (Rodin Museum) located, is an 18th century French Palace Style Mansion. In 1908, the famous French sculptor Auguste Rodin lived here for a time, and soon afterward he donated all of his possessions and works to the French government. In 1916, the mansion and garden of Hotel Biron were converted into the Rodin Museum, and opened to the public.

Manywhere Trivia:
Rodin’s sculptures can be seen all over the world, they are not replicas and each one is an original as long as it is approved by the French government.

Stepping through the doors of the museum, the courtyard greets you with Rodin’s most famous work The Thinker. It presents the image of a tormented and struggling poet, considered to be the embodiment of Dante, the author of the Divine Comedy.

The Rodin Museum has a collection of 6,600 sculptures, 8,000 paintings, ceramic and photographic works of art, including Art Treasures Created by Rodin as The Age of Bronze, The Kiss, The Thinker, and The Walking Man. Along with the individual works, a collection of Rodin’s Paintings by Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir was also donated and on display in the museum.

Manywhere Trivia:
Rodin’s The Gates of Hell was inspired by Gates of Paradise (Porte del Paradiso) of the Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptistery of Saint John) in Florence, designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti (1378-1455).

The outdoor gardens not only boast beautiful natural scenery, but also display The Gates of Hell, The Burghers of Calais, Monument to Victor Hugo and other large bronze sculptures by Rodin.

Among them, The Gates of Hell is a milestone in the history of modern sculpture, with Dante’s “Divine Comedy” as the theme, The Thinker, The Kiss and other works were part of this artwork, which also makes Auguste Rodin known as “the father of modern Western sculpture”.
