Rossio Square

Ripple pattern on gravel pavement

Located in the center of Lisbon city, the Rossio Square is originally known as King Pedro IV Square and is surrounded by a series of roads. The ground of the square is made of rubble in the shape of waves, with the Column of Pedro IV in the center and bronze fountains at both the north and south ends.

The Rossio Square, originally known as King Pedro IV Square, is located in the center of Lisbon city, surrounded by roads that lead to the Santa Justa Lift, Augusta Street and the Restauradores Square. Historically, Rossio Square was the venue for popular gatherings and celebrations, as well as for executions of prisoners. Nowadays, the square has become a tourist attraction, and the local population often passes through it due to its easy access.

The square was badly damaged by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, and the ground was restored in the traditional Portuguese style, with a wave shape made of rubble. Following the example of the Place de la Concorde in Paris, a 23 meter high Column of Pedro IV was erected in the center, and two Bronze Fountain imported from France were built at each end of the square.

The Queen Maria II National Theatre on the north side of the square was built in the 1840s, and its neoclassical appearance makes it the most striking focal point of the Rossio Square.
