Primeval Forests in the Sapporo Suburbs
The Maruyama Hill in the western suburbs of Sapporo was originally used as a testing field for trees during the developing days of Hokkaido, and many trees of the old-growth primeval forest are over 100 years old. Sapporo Maruyama Park is located at the foot of the hill and is a popular natural park with facilities such as a baseball field.
In the western suburbs of Sapporo, there is a 226-meter-high hill called Maruyama. In 1957, a park was opened at the foot of the hill for the public to enjoy Natural Sceneries, and this is Sapporo Maruyama Park 円山公園.
Manywhere Trivia:
Maruyama is called Moiwa by the Ainu (indigenous people of Hokkaido). But don’t confuse it with the Mount Moiwa nearby.
Maruyama Park is a famous Cherry Blossom and Maple Viewing Spot in Sapporo, with public facilities such as the Maruyama baseball field, Maruyama Stadium, and tennis courts. You can also visit the Hokkaido Jingu Shrine and the Maruyama Zoo nearby.
Guardian of Hokkaido
Hokkaido Jingu Shrine is located near Sapporo Maruyama Park and dates from the Meiji period. The shrine is dedicated to Hokkaido's guardian deities and early explorers, and was spiritual support for the local people during the developing period of Hokkaido. The shrine is surrounded by greenery and attracts many wild animals.
