Sapporo Odori Park

1.5 km Urban Green Space

Odori Park, located in the heart of Sapporo, is approximately 1.5 km long from east to west and spans twelve blocks. It is home to many landmark elements such as the Sapporo Television Tower, fountains, and sculptural artworks, and is also the main venue for many events such as the Sapporo Snow Festival.

Located in the heart of Sapporo, Odori Park 大通公園 spans 12 blocks from Odori Nishi 1 chome to Odori Nishi 12 chome, About 1.5 km East to West. Originally built as a firebreak in the heart of the city, Odori Park has slowly become a place for recreational activities for the public and nowadays the main venue for major events such as the annual Sapporo Snow Festival.

To clarify the main functions of the different zones, Sapporo Odori Park can be divided into five separate areas, from east to west: the International Exchange Zone, the Oasis of Light and Water Zone, the Assembly and Events Zone, the Historical and Cultural Zone and the Sunken Rose Garden Zone.

International Exchange Zone

The International Exchange Zone is from Nishi 1 chome to Nishi 2 chome. The Sapporo TV Tower, which stands at the east end of the park, is not only an absolute landmark of the park, but also a symbol of Sapporo. Built in 1957, the 147.2-meter-high tower has an observation deck at the top, 90 meters above the ground, and is A Great Place to Overlook Odori Park.

Completed in 1957, the Sapporo TV Tower is a city landmark in Sapporo, standing 147.2 meters high and featuring a 360-degree observation deck at a height of 90 meters from the ground. The observation deck is the best place to see the Odori Park venue during the Sapporo Snow Festival every year.

Oasis of Light and Water Zone

There are five fountains of different sizes in Odori Park, of which the two in Nishi 3 chome and Nishi 4 chome are the largest. The fountain at Nishi 3 chome, in particular, is 24 meters in diameter and shoots out 16 different forms of water every 15 minutes. With its illumination at night, it is no wonder the fountain is called Oasis of Light and Water.

Assembly and Events Zone

An open space and performance stage, as well as an outdoor display of sculptural art, have been created in the Assembly and Events Zone from Nishi 6 chome to Nishi 9 chome. It is home to Black Slide Mantra, a masterpiece of the famous sculptor Isamu Noguchi.

Historical and Cultural Zone

Sapporo, the center of Hokkaido, has witnessed a long and arduous history of developing and there are two Statues of Hokkaido Pioneers in the Historical and Cultural Zone of Odori Park.

Sunken Rose Garden Zone

At the western end of Sapporo Odori Park is a Sunken Rose Garden with 55 species of roses. The statue of a young girl among the flowers is graceful and behind the statue is the former office of the Sapporo Court, which is now open to the public as the Sapporo City Museum.
