Shirakawa Village - Kanda House

A Classic Gasshozukuri

The Kanda family was separated from the Wada family in Shirakawa-go and built this Kanda house around 1850. The Kanda Family House is a large house with an improved design, which is highly resistant to earthquakes and fire.

The Kanda family split from the Shirakawa-go 白川郷 Wada Family, who started their business with brewing and built this Kanda Family House 神田家住宅 around 1850.

The Kanda Family House is a large, improved Gassho-zukuri 合掌造り (Clasped-hands Style) house with several strong Curved Beams supporting its unique Earthquake Proof Wooden Structure, which is effective against typhoons and earthquakes.

Manywhere Trivia:
Bed and breakfast rooms in Shirakawa-go are extremely sought-after, and even more difficult to book for a foreign tourist.

The Kanda Family House has four floors, with the Living Space on the ground floor remaining untouched as its original state. The attic on the upper floor, where the owner kept silkworms, is now used as an exhibition space of Different types of Equipment for sericulture, logging, farming, etc.
