Blessed by Two Chinese Heroes
In 1864, the third Kapitan China of Kuala Lumpur, Yap Ah Loy, founded Sin Sze Si Ya Temple, which is dedicated to two deities who help to guide him during the Selangor Civil War. The temple is a center of belief for the local Chinese people.
Sin Sze Si Ya Temple is located near Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur and it is the Earliest Chinese Temple appearing in Kuala Lumpur, which is deeply influenced by Chinese culture.
The temple was built in 1864 and was founded by the third Kapitan China of Kuala Lumpur, Yap Ah Loy. The temple is mainly dedicated to Patron Deities of Sin Sze Ya and Si Sze Ya, who are actually based on two real persons of Sheng Meng Li (Kapitan of Sungai Ujong) and Chung Lai (Yap Ah Loy’s lieutenant). With their help, Yap Ah Loy finally won the Selangor Civil War in Kuala Lumpur.

“Kebitan” is the leader of the local Chinese people, originated from the Dutch word “Kapitein”, which is equal to the English word “Captain”.
Today the Sin Sze Si Ya Temple has become A Center of Faith for Local Chinese People. The temple is also dedicated to Emperor Guan 關聖帝君, Emperor Wenchang 文昌帝君 and other deities. Before the big exam, students always come here to pay homage to Emperor Wenchang for a successful exam.
