Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque

Stories of a Centennial Mosque

Completed in 1909, the Jamek Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Kuala Lumpur and was the highest status mosque in Kuala Lumpur until the National Mosque was built. Situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Jamek Mosque has an iconic dome and minarets.

The Jamek Mosque is located at the Confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers, officially known as the Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque.

Since its construction in 1909, the mosque has been regarded as the highest-ranking mosque in the region. It was only after the establishment of the National Mosque of Malaysia in 1965 that the focus gradually shifted. However, in the hearts of the Muslims living nearby, the Jamek Mosque remains their Most Important Place of Worship.

Manywhere Trivia:
The locals have a nickname for this iconic red and white facade style: blood and bandage.

The Jamek Mosque has Three Domes and Two 25-meter-tall Minarets, as well as a red and white facade and numerous small minarets. This Neo-Moorish Architecture can be seen on many other buildings in the vicinity, the most famous being the Sultan Abdul Samad Building across the river.
