After the death of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who unified Japan, he was honored as the guardian deity of the Edo Shogunate, and the shrine dedicated to him is called Toshogu Shrine. The most famous of these shrines is Nikko Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, which is the main shrine of all the Toshogu Shrines.
