Century-old Street Under the Arcades
Originating in the Meiji period, the Tanukikoji Shopping Street is a shopping street in Sapporo that runs east to west for nearly a kilometer, with two hundred shops covering dining, shopping, entertainment, and hotels. Arcade has been installed at the head of the street to shelter pedestrians from bad weather.
Located west of Sapporo’s Sosei River, the Tanukikoji Shopping Street 狸小路商店街 (Raccoon Dog Alley Shopping Arcade) spans seven blocks from east to west and is approximately one kilometer long. The Transparent Arcade is installed at the top of the shopping street so that people can wander around and enjoy shopping in wind or rain.
The Tanukikoji Shopping Street has been established for over 100 years, and during the early Meiji era, when Hokkaido was being developed, restaurants were opened in the present-day 2-chome to 3-chome of Tanukikoji. It is said that the name Raccoon Dog Alley came from the fact that raccoon dogs were always found nearby, and nowadays you can still see the Honjintanukidaimei Jinja, the Raccoon Dog Shrine, which is dedicated to raccoons.
Manywhere Tips:
Technically, a raccoon dog is not a raccoon.
Today, there are around 200 shops in the Tanukikoji Shopping Street, including Dining and Shopping, Entertainment and Leisure, Featured Hotels and other different categories. Whether you are looking for local flavor cuisine or shopping for local specialties, the Tanukikoji Shopping Street has everything you need.
